Welcome to Ledger
Ledger helps you take control of your digital assets by putting security first. Ledger hardware wallets are designed to keep your private keys offline and protected, giving you a safer way to manage crypto assets and digital identities.
This page will guide you through the first steps of getting started with your Ledger device, understanding how it works, and learning best practices for keeping your assets secure.
What Is a Ledger Hardware Wallet?
A Ledger hardware wallet is a physical device that securely stores your private keys—the secret codes that give access to digital assets. Unlike software wallets or online accounts, Ledger devices keep these keys offline, reducing exposure to malware, phishing, and online attacks.
Your assets themselves are not stored on the device. Instead, the Ledger wallet protects the keys that allow you to access and manage them on the blockchain. This means you remain in control at all times.
Getting Started in a Few Simple Steps
Setting up your Ledger device is straightforward and only takes a few minutes:
Unbox and connect your device
Make sure the packaging is sealed and untampered with. Connect your Ledger device to a computer or mobile phone using the provided cable or supported connection.Install Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official companion app that allows you to manage your accounts, install apps, and check balances. Always download Ledger Live from the official Ledger website to avoid fake or malicious software.Set a PIN code
During setup, you’ll choose a PIN code directly on the device. This PIN helps protect your wallet if the device is lost or accessed by someone else.Write down your recovery phrase
Your device will generate a 24-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the most important part of your wallet’s security. Write it down on paper and store it somewhere safe and private. Never take a photo of it or store it online.
Why the Recovery Phrase Matters
Your recovery phrase is the only way to restore access to your assets if your Ledger device is lost, damaged, or reset. Anyone with access to this phrase can control your assets, so it must be kept secret at all times.
Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase. No support agent, app, or website should ever request it. If someone does, it is a scam.
Security by Design
Ledger devices use a Secure Element chip, similar to the technology used in passports and payment cards. This chip is designed to resist both physical and digital attacks.
Every transaction must be reviewed and approved on the device itself, adding an extra layer of protection. Even if your computer or phone is compromised, your private keys remain protected inside the Ledger device.
Using Ledger Live
Ledger Live allows you to:
Add and manage supported accounts
Install and remove apps on your device
View balances and transaction history
Update device firmware safely
Ledger Live does not have access to your private keys. All sensitive actions require confirmation on your Ledger device.
Best Practices for Staying Safe
To keep your assets secure, always follow these guidelines:
Only use official Ledger software and websites
Keep your recovery phrase offline and private
Never share your PIN or recovery phrase with anyone
Be cautious of emails, messages, or websites claiming to be Ledger support
Take your time and verify details on your device screen before approving actions
Security is not just about technology—it’s also about good habits.
