Welcome to Ledger – Get Started Safely
Welcome to Ledger, the trusted name in hardware wallet security. This page will guide you through the essential steps to set up your Ledger device and begin managing your digital assets with confidence. Whether you’re new to cryptocurrency or already familiar with blockchain technology, Ledger is designed to help you protect what matters most—your private keys.
Why Choose a Ledger Hardware Wallet?
Ledger hardware wallets are built to keep your digital assets secure by storing private keys offline. Unlike software wallets or online platforms, Ledger devices protect your information from malware, phishing attempts, and unauthorized access. Your private keys never leave the device, giving you full control and ownership of your assets.
Ledger devices use a Secure Element chip, the same technology used in passports and credit cards, combined with Ledger’s proprietary operating system for maximum protection. This means your crypto remains secure even if your computer or phone is compromised.
Before You Begin
To get started, make sure you have:
A genuine Ledger device purchased from Ledger or an authorized reseller
A computer or smartphone with internet access
The official Ledger Live application
A few minutes of uninterrupted time to complete setup securely
Always ensure you are on the official Ledger website when downloading software or following setup instructions. Never trust third-party links or messages claiming to be Ledger support.
Step 1: Download Ledger Live
Ledger Live is the official app used to set up your device, manage accounts, install apps, and view balances. Visit the official Ledger website and download Ledger Live for your operating system (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, or iOS).
Once installed, open Ledger Live and choose “Get Started.” Select your Ledger device model and follow the on-screen instructions.
Step 2: Set Up Your Ledger Device
When you power on your Ledger device, you’ll be prompted to:
Choose a PIN code
Generate a recovery phrase
Your PIN code protects physical access to your device. Choose a code that is hard to guess and never share it with anyone.
Your recovery phrase (also called a secret recovery phrase) is the most important part of your setup. It consists of 24 words generated by your Ledger device. This phrase is the only way to recover your assets if your device is lost, stolen, or damaged.
Write the recovery phrase down on paper and store it offline.
Never take photos of it, store it digitally, or share it with anyone. Ledger will never ask for your recovery phrase—anyone who does is attempting fraud.
Step 3: Verify and Secure Your Recovery Phrase
Ledger Live will ask you to confirm your recovery phrase to ensure it was written down correctly. Take your time during this step. Accuracy matters.
Once confirmed, store your recovery phrase in a safe, private place. Consider using a fire-resistant or metal backup solution for added protection.
Step 4: Add Accounts and Manage Assets
After setup, you can install apps for supported cryptocurrencies directly from Ledger Live. Ledger supports thousands of digital assets, allowing you to manage multiple accounts from one secure device.
Ledger Live lets you:
View balances and transaction history
Send and receive crypto securely
Install and remove asset apps
Update firmware safely
All transactions must be physically confirmed on your Ledger device, adding an extra layer of protection.
Staying Safe with Ledger
Security is an ongoing process. Follow these best practices:
Never share your recovery phrase
Beware of phishing emails, fake websites, and social media scams
Keep your Ledger Live app and device firmware up to date
Only trust information from official Ledger channels
Ledger does not provide direct messages asking for personal information. If something feels suspicious, stop and verify through official support resources.
You’re in Control
With Ledger, you remain in full control of your digital assets. No third party can access your funds without your approval. By following the steps above and staying informed, you can use your Ledger device confidently and securely.
You’re now ready to begin your journey with Ledger—securely, independently, and responsibly.
